Gualdo Cattaneo:
Gualdo Cattaneo prende il nome dall’antico borgo di Gualdum Captaneorum, situato sulle pendici dei Monti Martani, ha una storia che risale al 975 quando il Conte Edoardo Cattaneo, vassallo dell’imperatore Ottone II di Sassonia, ricevette in feudo il territorio e costruì una maestosa Rocca. L’origine di Gualdo deriva probabilmente dalla parola “Wald” che significa “selva” o “bosco”, mentre il cognome Cattaneo fa riferimento ai “Captaneorum”, i capitani o signori al servizio del re.
Al centro della piazza principale del borgo si erge la possente Rocca, un imponente fortezza dalla forma triangolare equilatera, dotata di tre torri comunicanti tra loro e di vie sotterranee che si collegano alle mura del castello. Tra le attrazioni di interesse vi è la chiesa di Sant’Agostino, costruita nel 1136 e decorata con affreschi realizzati dalla scuola folignate. La chiesa parrocchiale, dedicata ai Santi Antonio e Antonino e risalente al 1260, è stata ristrutturata nel corso dell’Ottocento e presenta una cripta romanica elegante, conosciuta anche come chiesa sotterranea, che custodisce le reliquie dei santi. Infine, la chiesa di Sant’Andrea, di stile romanico, sebbene sia stata rifatta nel 1804.
